ZymoGenetics, Inc. is a biopharmaceutical company focused on the discovery and development of protein therapeutics that prevent or treat significant human diseases. From 1988 to 2000, ZymoGenetics was a research subsidiary of Novo Nordisk A/S (Novo), a major pharmaceutical company based in Denmark. Through the mid-1990's, using traditional techniques of biotechnology, ZymoGenetics played a significant role in the discovery of five successfully commercialized products with current sales in excess of $2 billion, including recombinant insulin, Factor VII and an analog of tissue plasminogen activator. Beginning in 1995, ZymoGenetics shifted its research strategy to capitalize on the explosive creation of genetic information flowing from the human genome project and other sources. In November 2000, Warburg Pincus led a $150 million private financing to spinout ZymoGenetics from Novo and unlock the tremendous value of its assets. Today, using its product discovery engine, ZymoGenetics has generated a broad pipeline of proprietary product candidates, which span a wide array of clinical opportunities including surgical bleeding, autoimmune disease, cancer, and infectious disease. The company intends to commercialize these product candidates through internal development, collaborations with biopharmaceutical partners, and out-licensing of its extensive patent portfolio. ZymoGenetics successfully completed its initial public offering in February 2002, raising $120 million in gross proceeds.
