Calyx evolved from an earlier Warburg Pincus investment in National Demographics and Lifestyles, Inc. ("NDLI"), a marketing database company in the United States. In 1986, Warburg Pincus assisted in structuring and financing the creation of an NDLI European subsidiary, which became an independent company in 1998. After several years of rapid expansion financed by Warburg Pincus, the company restructured into Calyx, a leading European marketing database company focused on consumer data collection and list sales. Warburg Pincus' global expertise was critical in enabling Calyx to acquire its principal United Kingdom competitor in 1992 from a United States bankruptcy trustee. In addition, Warburg Pincus encouraged and supported Calyx's entry into continental Europe, where the company established a consumer data collection and list sales business in France, adding substantially to Calyx's value. In the fall of 1994 Calyx was acquired by Dutch multinational publishing group, VNU.
