Information Holdings (Darien, Connecticut) was formed in January 1997 by Warburg Pincus and Mason Slaine to create a significant business information publishing business based on the premise that Slaine's publishing experience and proven track record combined with Warburg Pincus capital would enable Information Holdings (IHI) to grow quickly in size and value. In 1997, IHI acquired CRC Press, a supplier of information products to professionals in the scientific and technical markets, and MicroPatent, which provides patent and trademark information to intellectual property professionals. Since 1997, IHI has made numerous fold-in acquisitions in these areas, including the 2001 acquisitions of Liquent and IDRAC, which together provide content assembly, publishing and IP information solutions to regulatory professionals in the life sciences industry. In 2000, the Company entered the information technology learning market with the acquisition of the assets of Transcender, which provides certification test-preparation products for leading software products such as Microsoft and Cisco. Warburg Pincus provided $31.8 million in initial capital to fund four acquisitions in 1997, and in August 1998, the company raised $50 million through an IPO and was listed on the New York Stock Exchange. In March 2000, the company raised an additional $165 million in a follow-on equity offering. Today, the company is a leading provider of information products, software and services to professional end users in the intellectual property, scientific, and information technology learning markets.
