Synaptic Pharmaceutical Corporation is a drug discovery and development company using an industry-leading G-protein coupled receptor ("GPCR") platform to develop novel therapeutic products. GPCRs represent one of the most attractive target classes available for drug discovery, as evidenced by the fact that approximately 30 of the 100 largest selling drugs on the market today are believed to act on GPCRs. Founded in 1988, Synaptic has developed a leading intellectual property position covering novel GPCR discoveries, as well as a high degree of expertise in identifying and elucidating the biological functions of previously unknown GPCRs. Today, Synaptic is leveraging this accumulated experience and asset base to engage in drug and target discovery collaborations with other pharmaceutical companies and to advance selective drug candidates developed from its platform internally through at least Phase II clinical trials. In August 2001, Warburg Pincus invested a total of $35 million to lead a $41 million financing to help unlock the value of Synaptic's tremendous GPCR technology estate. In March 2003, Synaptic completed its merger with H. Lundbeck A/S, a Denmark-based international pharmaceutical company.
