Triangle Pharmaceuticals is a biopharmaceutical company dedicated to developing effective solutions for serious viral disease, with a particular focus on therapies for the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), including the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and the hepatitis B virus (HBV). The company was founded in 1995 by a team of former Burroughs Wellcome executives. Prior to their employment with Triangle, members of the company's senior management team played instrumental roles in the identification, clinical development and commercialization of several leading antiviral therapies, including the first HIV drug, AZT. The business model of the company from the outset was to leverage the expertise of the management team to in-license, develop and commercialize important antiviral medicines. Today, Triangle has a strong portfolio of antiviral drug candidates in advanced stages of development including Coviracil (emtricitabine) for HIV and HBV, amdoxovir for HIV and clevudine for HBV. Triangle is also developing immunotherapies for HIV in collaboration with Dynavax utilizing Dynavax's ImmunoStimulatory Sequence technology. This North Carolina-based company plans to continue strengthening its pipeline via the ongoing development of its active drug candidates and the selective in-licensing of additional targeted compounds for the treatment of serious diseases. In 2001, Warburg Pincus invested $60 million to lead a $75 million private equity financing to help the company realize the tremendous commercial potential that exists in its product pipeline. In January 2003, Triangle Pharmaceuticals was acquired by Gilead Sciences, Inc. (NASDAQ: GILD), a leading antiviral biotechnology company.
