Based in Maple Grove, Minnesota, Velocimed is a private company focused on the development of three novel cardiovascular devices: (i) Proxis, the company’s lead product, designed to reduce the incidence of adverse outcomes due to the release of thrombotic emboli during high-risk coronary stenting procedures and representing the first proximal approach to coronary embolic protection; (ii) the Premere PFO Closure System, a patent foramen ovale (PFO) percutaneous closure device designed to seal a small channel in the septum of the heart between the atria, a common congenital defect associated with cryptogenic stroke; and (iii) the Venture Wire Control Catheter, a device designed to provide fine steering control and focused pushability to direct a standard guide wire through tight lesions. Warburg Pincus led each round of financing for the company since its founding in January 2001 by a team of former senior executives from SciMed Life Systems and Dennis W. Wahr, M.D., a leading interventional cardiologist and the inventor of the company's device concepts. Velocimed was acquired by St. Jude Medical in April 2005.
