Ceres Inc., is a plant genomics biotechnology company that develops proprietary seeds for energy crops to be used as feedstock in cellulosic ethanol production. Over the past ten years, Ceres has developed an extensive, patented library of genetic traits for row crops, such as corn. In addition, Ceres has secured exclusive access to leading proprietary energy crop germplasm which will allow the company to develop and market superior energy-crop seeds for the emerging cellulosic ethanol industry. Ceres plans to launch sales of a high-yielding switchgrass cultivar in 2009 and to offer further improved seed varieties around the same time that a commercially-proven cellulosic ethanol industry is expected to ramp up.
