ProStrakan Group plc was created in 2004 by the merger of Strakan Group plc and ProSkelia. The combined company, based in Galashiels, Scotland, is a rapidly growing international specialty pharmaceutical company engaged in the development and commercialization of prescription medicines for the treatment of unmet therapeutic needs in major markets. Strakan was founded by Harry Stratford and John Kanis in 1995. Stratford was the founding CEO of Shire Pharmaceuticals plc, the most successful and largest specialty pharmaceutical company in the UK, and became the non-executive Chairman of ProStrakan until his retirement at the end of 2007. ProSkelia, located in Paris, France, was a drug research and development company created by Aventis and Warburg Pincus as a spin-out of Aventis’ bone disease unit via a €60 million investment. ProStrakan completed its IPO on the London Stock Exchange in 2005. With approximately 200 people employed in the Company's operations, ProStrakan has commercial operations in the UK and across continental Europe. In 2006, sales reached £38.5 million.
