Archimedes Pharma was formed by Warburg Pincus and management to create a pan-European specialty pharmaceutical company through a roll-up of European pharmaceutical businesses. In 2005, Warburg Pincus committed $47 million to Archimedes in order to finance the acquisition of the European operations and U.S. assets of the drug-delivery division of West Pharmaceutical Services Inc. As part of the acquisition, Archimedes acquired a broad drug-delivery technology platform focused on both nasal and oral technologies, as well as a robust product pipeline consisting of both clinical and pre-clinical programs in a number of therapeutic areas. In early 2009, Archimedes successfully completed Phase III clinical trials for its lead product, Nasalfent, an intranasal fentanyl for rapid relief of breakthrough cancer pain, and the product is currently undergoing regulatory review in both Europe and the US. In October 2006, Archimedes Pharma acquired Link Holdings Ltd, a U.K.-based pharmaceuticals group that focuses on sales and marketing of specialty pharmaceuticals, which it has expanded across Europe and grown to over $35 million of turnover.
