Nicholas Piramal India Ltd., headquartered in Mumbai, India, is the
second largest company in the Indian pharmaceutical industry. When
Warburg Pincus invested in the company in 1997, NPIL had already
acquired the Indian subsidiaries of F. Hoffman-La Roche (Roche) and
Boehringer-Mannheim International, and had received the rights to
market in India all new pharmaceutical product introductions from
Roche. The company has since acquired the Indian subsidiary of Rhone
Poulenc, the pharmaceutical business of ICI (India), and the Indian
research and development facility of Hoechst AG. Additionally,
marketing relationships have been formed with Boots Healthcare
International, Stryker Corporation, Allergan Inc. and Scholl Plc for a
wide range of healthcare products. The NPIL product line is diverse,
covering all large therapeutic segments including antibiotics,
cardiovascular, diabetes, gastrointestinal, vitamins, neurology, and
dermatology. In addition, it has a strong presence in over-the-counter
products, specialized glass containers and diagnostic products. The
company's stock is publicly traded on the Bombay Stock Exchange.
