NuLens, founded in 2002 and based in Herzliya, Israel, is developing an accommodating intraocular lens (IOL) for use in cataract surgery. A standard, or monofocal, IOL has a fixed focal plane and only allows a patient to see clearly at distance. In contrast, an accommodating IOL is designed to mimic the natural function of the eye, enabling patients to see clearly at near, intermediate, and distance without reading glasses.
Warburg Pincus made its initial investment in NuLens in March 2006, and has continued to provide financing to support product development and early clinical trials.
