PhotoThera, based in Carlsbad, California, is developing a proprietary, light-based therapy, called transcranial laser therapy (“TLT”) for the treatment of neurological diseases and disorders. The company’s first product, NeuroThera, is an investigational device that seeks to improve neurological outcomes in stroke patients via noninvasive delivery of near-infrared laser energy into the brain. The NeuroThera system offers a potentially compelling option for the treatment of acute ischemic stroke up to 24 hours following onset of symptoms. PhotoThera’s first phase III clinical trial demonstrated both the safety of the TLT treatment and statistically significant effectiveness for certain cohorts of stroke patients using a post-hoc data analysis. PhotoThera is currently pursuing a follow-on phase III clinical study. In April 2009, Warburg Pincus led a $50 million Series D financing, the proceeds of which are being used to fund the follow-on clinical trial for NeuroThera.
