René Obermann joined Warburg Pincus in February 2015 as a Managing Director and Partner. Subsequent to investments made by Warburg Pincus, he has assumed roles as Non-Executive Chairman of the Board at 1&1 IONOS and Non-Executive Director of Inexio KGaA. Independently, he serves on the boards of Airbus SE, Allianz Deutschland AG, Telenor ASA and is a member of the Editorial Board of DIE ZEIT.
René worked as CEO of Ziggo BV in The Netherlands from 2014 until the merger with LibertyGlobal’s UPC. Prior to this, René worked at Deutsche Telekom Group (DT) between 1998 and 2013. After running their mobile division (T-Mobile International), he was appointed CEO of Deutsche Telekom AG in November 2006, where he remained until December 2013.
René began his career with a business traineeship at BMW AG in Munich. In 1986, he founded ABC Telekom, a company which marketed and distributed telecommunications equipment and provided technical services. After the acquisition of ABC Telekom by Hutchison Whampoa in 1991, René became Managing Partner of the combined entity (Hutchison Mobilfunk GmbH) and subsequently became CEO between 1993 and 1998.
From 2007-2013, Rene served as Vice President of the German Association for Information Technology, Telecommunications and New Media (BITKOM). Rene has been presented with the Visionary Leadership Award by the Ben Gurion University in Israel and received the Ordre national de la Légion d’honneur in France, alongside other prestigious accolades.
